Total organic carbon (TOC) is determined by the oxidation of the organics present with persulfate when exposed to UV radiation. The concentration of the formed carbon dioxide is proportional to the TOC content in the water and is determined using an IR detector. The oxidation step is preceded by the removal of inorganic carbon with an acid solution. Analytical systems are mounted in block-boxes or cabinets manufactured by TOS-Technologies LLC with the necessary life support systems.
